Building Stronger Communities, One Backpack at a Time

When a community comes together to invest in its students, everyone benefits. From local businesses and nonprofit organizations to volunteers and neighbors, supporting education extends far beyond the classroom. One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to make a difference is through school supply drives, helping ensure every student begins the school year equipped for success.

At Martin Specialty Coatings (MSC), we believe our responsibility doesn't end when a project is completed. As a company rooted in the communities we serve, we're committed to giving back and supporting initiatives that create lasting, positive change. That's why we were proud to partner with Volunteers of America of North Louisiana for our recent School Supply Drive, benefiting students at Booker T. Washington High School and Woodlawn High School.

Why School Supply Drives Matter

For many families, the cost of preparing children for a new school year continues to rise. Basic classroom necessities like binders, notebooks, paper, pencils, backpacks, and headphones can quickly become a financial burden.

When students have the supplies they need from day one, they're able to:

  • Arrive in the classroom prepared and confident.
  • Stay focused on learning instead of worrying about missing materials.
  • Participate fully in classroom activities.
  • Build organizational skills that contribute to academic success.
  • Feel supported by their community.

Something as simple as donating a package of notebook paper or a box of pencils can make a meaningful difference in a student's educational experience.

Community Partnerships Create Greater Impact

One of the most effective ways to serve a community is by working together. Volunteers of America of North Louisiana has a long-standing commitment to helping individuals and families throughout our region, making them an ideal partner for this initiative.

Together, MSC and Volunteers of America created an opportunity for employees, customers, vendors, and community members to contribute school supplies that would directly benefit students attending Booker T. Washington High School and Woodlawn High School.

By partnering with an organization that understands the needs of local families, we were able to ensure donations reached the students who need them most.

How Martin Specialty Coatings Got Involved

Throughout the drive, Martin Specialty Coatings collected essential school supplies including:

  • 2-inch binders
  • Packages of dividers
  • Index cards
  • Folders
  • Notebooks
  • College-ruled loose leaf paper
  • Blue, black, and red pens
  • Pencils
  • Glue sticks
  • Colored pencils
  • Erasers
  • Highlighters
  • Clear or mesh backpacks
  • Earbuds or headphones
  • Kleenex

Employees and visitors were encouraged to drop off donations at the MSC office throughout the campaign, making participation easy and convenient for everyone who wanted to help.

Every donation, whether large or small, represented an investment in a student's future.

Supporting Local Schools Strengthens Our Entire Community

Successful schools help build stronger communities. When students have the resources they need to learn, they are better positioned to reach their potential, graduate, and eventually contribute back to the communities they call home.

Supporting local schools doesn't always require large financial contributions. Sometimes it simply means donating supplies, volunteering your time, mentoring students, or partnering with organizations already making a difference.

Businesses play an important role in this effort. By using their resources, facilities, and employee engagement opportunities, companies can help bridge gaps that directly impact students and educators.

Giving Back Is Part of Who We Are

At Martin Specialty Coatings, we take pride in improving buildings and protecting facilities across the region—but we're equally passionate about strengthening the communities where we live and work.

Partnering with Volunteers of America of North Louisiana for this school supply drive was more than a donation effort. It was an opportunity to support local students, encourage community involvement, and invest in the next generation.

We're incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed supplies and helped make this initiative a success.

Looking Ahead

Community support doesn't end when the school year begins. Throughout the year, local schools and nonprofit organizations continue to rely on volunteers, donations, and partnerships to provide students with the tools they need to succeed.

Whether it's participating in a school supply drive, supporting local nonprofits, or simply finding ways to give back, every act of generosity helps create stronger schools and stronger communities.

At Martin Specialty Coatings, we're honored to be part of those efforts and look forward to continuing to support the communities that have supported us for so many years.
